Why We Give

“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it…”  – Psalm 24:1.  As followers of Jesus we believe that we are stewards of God’s resources because He is the owner of all that we have. Throughout scripture, we are reminded of the importance of giving back a portion of what God has so generously provided.

Ways to Give

We offer different ways that you can give to God’s work through your tithes and offerings.

Your Time & Talents:  We have many opportunities for you to give of your time to further the kingdom.  These opportunities are inside the building, outside in the community and global through missions.  As members of a body of Christ we are called to go joyfully into our community and love and serve others in Jesus’ name.  The time you devote strengthens and extends God’s work.

Your Treasures: We recognize that all we have is because of God and giving is an act of worship that should be done with a spirit of thanksgiving.

     a. You can give Sunday mornings by placing your financial gifts in the offering boxes located at the entrance of the sanctuary.

     b. You can mail in your financial gifts to Hillsboro Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 306, Hillsboro, IL  62049.  We have offering envelopes that can be mailed. Simply let us know you would like a box of offering envelopes and we will be sure to get one to you.

    c. You can give by setting up an automatic payment through your online banking.  Contact us if you need help in doing this.  This service gives you the opportunity to set up a recurring tithe/offerings when and how you want it…worry-free!

     d. You can give online from our church website through PayPal. We do strongly suggest that no one use a credit card unless it is paid off every month. The Bible speaks in Proverbs 22:7 about “…the borrower [being] servant to the lender.” We do not wish our congregation to go into debt by tithing on a credit card.

Q. What is PayPal?

A. PayPal is an online service for businesses and non-profits to accept payments/donations online. It’s a widely used and safe way for people to send money on the Internet.

Q. Do I need a PayPal account to donate?

A. No — You can simply enter your payment information on PayPal’s secure website and the donation will be sent as a one-time gift to the church.

Q. How does the church get the money I send?

A. After you complete the payment information steps at PayPal, the funds are immediately deposited in the church’s online PayPal account. The bookkeeper will then transfer your donation to the church’s bank account.

Q. Are there any fees or costs to give online?

A. You pay no fee for using PayPal when making a donation to our church. The full amount that you choose to donate goes to the church and is considered a tax-deductible gift. There is a small fee to the church for the processing of credit and debit cards.

Q. Is my information safe and confidential?

A. Yes — Online giving is actually less risky than handwritten checks. An online transaction cannot be lost, stolen, or destroyed. PayPal automatically encrypts your confidential information using the Secure Sockets Layer protocol (SSL) with an encryption key length of 128-bits (the highest level commercially available). When you give through PayPal, the church does NOT see private information like your debit card or bank account number.

Q. How do I know my donation made it to the church?

A. You will receive a confirmation email immediately after you complete your donation. You can keep the email as a receipt for tax purposes.

Q. How is my contribution documented?

A. The bookkeeper is the only person who will receive an email notice each time a contribution is made online. Using the address information you provide, your contribution will be recorded for the church records. Your online giving will also be added to your year-end contribution statement.

Q. Can I designate how my donation is used?

A. Yes — Besides giving your Tithes or Offerings through online giving you may choose a few other areas where you can designate giving.  After you fill in your payment information and click to continue to the next page, you will find “Add Fund Description” you can click if you want to designate your donation as a Memorial Gift in memory of a loved one or as a donation for going on a church sponsored Mission Trip.  Our bookkeeper will see the note on the confirmation email sent to the church and your donation will be allocated to the specified account.

Q. Why do you ask me for my address and other information?

A. This information is needed to confirm that your debit, credit, or bank information belongs to you. It also is the information that the church needs to make sure that your year-end contribution statement is mailed to you for tax purposes.

Q. Can I use a credit card to give online?

A.  Yes, we do allow people to use their credit card because we understand many people use their credit card to earn ‘points’ toward various things.  If you choose to give with a credit card, we encourage you to remain financially responsible by not accruing any debt by paying off your credit card statement on a monthly basis.

If you struggle with paying off your credit card bill each month, please do not use it.  The Bible speaks in Proverbs 22:7 about “…the borrower [being] servant to the lender.” We do not wish you to go into debt by giving on your credit card.  Instead, if you have problems paying off your credit card bills, we encourage you to consider using money you would donate to church to pay for a program on how to handle your finances God’s way.  We can help you find such a class or program.
