Description

About my sermons:

The standard way I prepare a sermon is to begin by praying through the text (asking God to help me to understand His Word) and jot down any questions or insights I have.  I will then search for any critical commentary help I need with questions I may have.  Next, I will read anywhere from 8 – 12 resources for sermons.  Here are some of the pastors whose work I read most often for resources, though I do read others frequently:

Lloyd John Ogilvie, Tim Keller, John Piper, James Montgomery Boice, Mark Driscoll, John Ortberg, Allistair Begg, John MacArthur, Ray Pritchard, Larry Osborne, Stuart Briscoe, Charles Swindoll, Bill Hybels, Craig Groeschel, Dave Wilkinson, Rick Warren, Bruce Goettsche, Mark Adams, Craig Barnes, Ray Stedman, Vic Pentz, and others.

I often tell people I treat my sermons like a research paper in preparation and if I was publishing them there would be many, many footnotes to point to the ideas and thoughts of others.  It is very likely that whatever you hear / read in one of my sermons was said by someone else.

One thing I do NOT do is tell someone else’s story as if it is mine.  If I say, “I did ‘x’” or if I talk about my doing “y” then I really did “x” and “y”.  This doesn’t apply to something I am telling as a joke, which I hope you can catch as it should be obvious.  Sometimes, though, the funny thing I am talking about did indeed happen to me.
